Exterior Preparation

Clear the Perimeter

Move pot plants, outdoor furniture, BBQs, garden tools and anything else around the exterior of the home. Painters need clear access to all walls.

Trim Vegetation

Prune back shrubs and plants that are touching or close to the walls. Overhanging branches make painting difficult and trap moisture against surfaces.

Secure or Remove Pets

Dogs in particular can create issues — both for safety and for the freshly painted surfaces. Arrange a safe space for pets during painting days.

Interior Preparation

Remove Wall Hangings

Take down all pictures, mirrors, clocks and wall-mounted items. This is faster for you to do than for painters to work around.

Move Small Furniture

Painters will move large furniture to the centre of the room (and cover it), but small items, lamps, ornaments and valuables should be removed from the room.

Protect Electronics

Dust sheets do a good job but paint mist can travel. Move TVs, computers and audio equipment to adjacent rooms if possible.

Communication Is Key

Let painters know about any areas of concern — previous repairs, moisture issues, areas you're particularly pleased with and want preserved. A quick walk-through at the start of day one saves misunderstandings later.

What Painters Handle

Your painter will protect floors, masking windows, cover furniture and apply all drop sheets. Your job is just to clear access and communicate your expectations clearly.
